Early September is a beautiful time in the Chequamegon Bay area. It is the very end of the Big Top Chautauqua performance season. It is also a very popular time of year to visit, and unfortunately motel rooms are more expensive at this time. We recommend making lodging reservations early. Also listed are a number of camping options in the area.

Camping in the Area

City of Ashland – Prentice Park (near Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center (NGLVC)
Prentice Park, located on the western edge of Ashland, offers 10 tent camping sites and 6 New RV sites with water, electric, showers and Wifi. Prentice Park has artesian wells, 2+ miles of ADA trail, playground, pavilions, and easy access to US Hwy 2 and Lake Superior. Nestled in a boreal forest, camping at Prentice Park provides privacy and is only a short walk from Maslowski Beach. Tent and RV sites available on a “first come, first served” system. RV rates $30 nightly, Tent rates $17 nightly.

Thompson’s West End Park has 45 campsites, boat launch, fishing pier, dump stations, artesian well, electric hook-ups, handicap accessible bathrooms, showers, sandy beach, picnic tables, pavilion, and playground. $27 nightly for site with electric.

Washburn Memorial Park Campgrounds has 48 campsites, showers, sandy beach, picnic tables, electric hook-ups, pavilion, playground, shaded sites, flush toilets, dump station, electric service, wi-fi. $27 / nightly for site with electric. $22 for non-electric site.

Point Detour – Rustic campground a few miles north, overlooking Lake Superior and Apostle Islands. First come, first served. Pay camping fee at casino hotel desk.

Chequamegon – Nicolet National Forest: Birch Grove Campground on Bayfield Peninsula remains closed due to storm damage.

Potato River Falls – Iron County Park, Gurney, WI 54528 (about 20 miles east of NGLVC)
East on Highway 2 to 169, south to Potato Falls Road. Five primitive campsites, pit toilet. Waterfall, hiking trails.
