Illegal Deaths and Injuries to Wisconsin’s Large Wild Birds: Identifying and Evaluating Recent Occurrences – Phase 1 Project Report

Wisconsin’s Green Fire (WGF) released a new report as Phase 1 of an ongoing project on Wisconsin birds: “Illegal Deaths and Injuries to Wisconsin’s Large Wild Birds: Identifying and Evaluating Recent Occurrences.”

This paper was authored by Kerry Beheler, a member of WGF’s Wildlife Work Group and expert in wildlife and veterinary health pathology. The paper was reviewed by Michael Meyer, our Senior Scientist on staff.

This report organizes five years of data from Wisconsin wildlife rehabilitators on deaths and injuries to non-hunted birds like:

  • Common loon
  • American white pelican
  • Tundra swan
  • Trumpeter swan
  • Sandhill crane
  • Turkey vulture
  • Northern goshawk
  • Cooper’s hawk
  • Rough legged hawk
  • Red-tailed hawk
  • Red shouldered hawk
  • Bald eagle
  • Osprey
  • Merlin
  • Great horned owl

This project identified issues leading to bird injury and death like collisions with vehicles, poor nutrition, lead toxicosis, infection, and entanglement. Future phases of the project will dive into deeper details and trends in the data.
